The Gut–Brain–Hormone Connection: Why Your Mood and Energy Depend on Your Gut

If you’ve ever felt moody, foggy, or low on energy and wondered if it was “just hormones,” you’re not wrong, but there’s more to the story. Your gut and your brain are in constant communication, and that relationship has a huge impact on your hormones too.

How Your Gut Talks to Your Brain

The gut and brain are connected through a two-way highway called the gut–brain axis. This means stress in the brain can affect digestion, while imbalances in the gut can affect how you think and feel.
  1. About 90% of serotonin, your “feel-good” neurotransmitter, is produced in the gut.
  2. Gut bacteria influence dopamine and GABA, which help regulate motivation, calm, and sleep.
  3. When your microbiome is out of balance, mood swings, anxiety, and brain fog are often close behind.

The Hormone Piece

Here’s where it gets even more interesting: your gut health also influences your hormones, especially during perimenopause and menopause when things can feel extra unpredictable.
  1. Estrogen balance depends on gut bacteria. If the gut isn’t clearing estrogen properly, you may feel bloated, moody, or notice heavier cycles.
  2. Cortisol, your stress hormone, is tightly linked to gut health. A disrupted gut can keep cortisol high, leaving you wired but tired.
  3. Thyroid hormones (your metabolism regulators) need a healthy gut for conversion into their active form.

When the gut is supported, hormones have a smoother ride, leading to more stable energy, mood, and cycles.

What This Means for Energy and Mood

Think of your gut as your body’s control center for stability:

  1. A balanced gut → steady blood sugar, less bloating, fewer cravings.
  2. A diverse microbiome → calmer mood, more resilience to stress.
  3. Healthy digestion → better absorption of nutrients that fuel your hormones and brain.

Simple Steps to Support the Gut–Brain–Hormone Connection

  1. Eat fiber + plant variety (beans, veggies, fruit, herbs) to feed beneficial bacteria.
  2. Add fermented foods (sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, yogurt) to introduce more helpful microbes.
  3. Prioritize protein at meals for steady energy and hormone production.
  4. Rest and recover (SERIOUSLY) stress management and sleep are just as important for gut and hormone balance.

The Bottom Line

Your mood and hormones aren’t just about your brain or your ovaries, they’re influenced by what’s happening in your gut.

The good news?

Small daily choices, like adding a tablespoon of sauerkraut with dinner or starting the day with a protein-rich breakfast, can shift your energy and mood in a big way.
